Training and career-development support at every stage: F30/F31 predoctoral and F32 postdoctoral fellowships covering stipend, tuition, and allowance; K08 for clinician-scientists, providing salary plus research costs over 3–5 years; and K99/R00 Pathway to Independence, giving 1–2 mentored years then up to 3 independent years at up to $249,000 total costs a year, portable to a faculty position.
No disease restriction applies, so mitochondrial and cardiolipin biology projects are eligible across mechanisms — F32 and K99 in particular for BTHS postdocs.
Career-stage defined: F30/F31 enrolled doctoral students, F32 postdocs, K08 clinicians (MD/DO/MD-PhD), K99 postdocs within 4 years of starting postdoc. F and most K awards require US citizenship or permanent residency; K99/R00 is open to any nationality. T32 slots are applied for through your institution's training program.
Applications go through ASSIST/Grants.gov under the current parent announcements, with the institution's grants office. Standard NIH due dates run three cycles per year. Fellowship review criteria were revised for applications due on or after Jan 25, 2025.
