BSF Research Grant Program (IDEA & DEVELOPMENT Grants)
Barth Syndrome Foundation & International Affiliates
BSF's competitive grant program: seed grants for basic, translational, and clinical research — natural history, biochemical basis, and treatment — intended to generate preliminary data for follow-on NIH-scale funding. Indirects are capped at 10%. Young and non-tenured investigators may put up to 75% of funds toward PI salary. Research-participant travel for clinical studies is budgeted outside the cap. BSF affiliates (Canada, UK/Barth Syndrome Trust, Barth Italia, Association Barth France) co-fund through this single program.
Barth-specific by design — this is the foundation's own program, so BTHS is the entire remit rather than an eligible subset. It is the most direct route to funding for work that would be too disease-narrow elsewhere.
Independent investigators with faculty appointments, worldwide — no geographic restrictions. Postdocs cannot apply as PI (they are directed to the AHA/BSF co-funded fellowships instead).
Apply via BSF's SurveyMonkey Apply portal. An LOI is required for DEVELOPMENT-grant applications and optional for IDEA grants. Annual cycle: opens ~July 31, full applications due Oct 31, awards announced ~March. Guidelines, budget table, and grant policies are downloadable inside the portal.
