Wellcome Early-Career, Career Development & Discovery Awards

Wellcome funds any health-related science at three career stages: Early-Career Awards (up to 5 years, full salary plus up to £400,000 expenses), Career Development Awards for mid-career researchers, and Discovery Awards for established teams, averaging £3.5M over up to 8 years.
Rare mitochondrial disease is within the any-health-related-science remit, so BTHS work is eligible at every stage without needing a disease-specific call.
The administering organization must be in the UK, Republic of Ireland (Early-Career), or eligible countries — nationality is open but the lab must be there. From 29 October 2026, Discovery Award lead applicants are restricted to the UK and LMICs in Africa / South & South-east Asia; US-based investigators can participate only as co-applicants.
Applications go through the Wellcome Funding online system. The current Discovery round closes September 22, 2026, after which the scheme becomes always-open with no deadlines. The next Early-Career round is posted on the site.
